Slaughter in Pskov

by Evan Sarafian

In this scene, the Teutonic Knights have taken the city of Pskov and slaughter a crowd of citizens. The viewer watches as they create a battle formation, lower their pikes to a lethal angle and then slowly charge the bound, helpless victims. The first wave of knights mainly stab with their pikes while the subsequent waves slashed and hacked with swords and large, exaggerated movements. The variety in this weaponry of this scene adds to a mounting tension of the instance of the crowd's death as well as the overall scene of the city's demise since there is a transition from the less gruesome, more robotic stabbing of the pikes to the much more emphasized slashing and hacking of the swords.
